Keep up the Pace

Keep up the Pace

Looking for running spots around Leeds that aren’t just sprinting to your 9am? Whether you’re training for a marathon, just starting your healthy habits, or just trying to touch grass after a week in the library, Leeds has got loads of solid running routes.

Here’s our top five recommended routes for every type of runner, even if your current PB is racing to submit coursework 10 minutes before it’s due.

Beckett Park

If you want a scenic route without dodging traffic every 30 seconds, Beckett Park is top of the list. Right by Leeds Beckett Headingley Campus, it’s got loads of open space, tree-lined paths and enough room to make your run as short or painful as you want. Perfect if you’re after soft terrain that doesn’t mess up your knees or an aesthetic route that helps you forget the shin splints.

Best for: Easy runs, interval sessions, and anyone fighting for their life while listening to house music.

Headingley - Meanwood Loop If you’re more of a road runner, this easy 3km loop is a shout.

Starting around Wood Lane, it takes you through Meanwood and Hyde Park before looping back into Headingley. It’s a straightforward classic route and ideal if you’re trying to build stamina or start small.

Bonus -  it starts and finishes in the same place, so there’s no awkward post-run walk home.

Best for: Beginners, 5K prep, and the people only here for the strava screenshot.

The Otley Run (but actually running)Yes, that Otley Run.

Instead of nursing a three day hangover with remnants of your costume chucked about your room, you can leave this version of the Otley Run with less beer fear and probably more of your overdraft left. It’s about 3km and mostly flat, so ideal for steady runs and building confidence.

Add the run back and you’ve got yourself a decent 6km run.

Best for: Social runs, flatter terrain and proving you can handle the Otley Run sober.

Kirkstall Valley

If your dream run involves less people and more greenery, riverside views and getting aesthetic sunset pics, Kirkstall Valley is the one.

The loop is only a mile, but you can repeat it depending on how locked in you’re feeling, and how good the playlist is. Warning, it can be muddy when rainy, which Leeds usually is. Trail shoes are probably the move for this one.

Best for: Nature lovers, slower runs and pretending you’re in the countryside when you’re actually 10 minutes from Headingley.

Hyde Park 5km

If you want a run that feels achievable and ends with a good coffee, this route’s ideal. Starting outside the University of Leeds Student Union and ending at Hyde Cafe on Headingley Lane, it’s the perfect short run when you need a post lecture reset or just an excuse to leave your bed.

The route takes you through campus, Hyde Park and straight into a lively student area, perfect for solo runners who still want to feel safe. It’s mainly flat, easy to follow and ends at a cafe for coffee, food and a potential sweet treat reward.

Oh, and we’ve tried and tested this run for our Run It Back run club, safe to say it’s 100% approved.

Best for: All abilities, post-library reset runs, and people who need a little café motivation to get moving.

Start small, don’t take it too seriously, and remember every run counts even if it’s just an excuse for a best mates debrief, pint after or to buy a new pair of trainers.
